Google is no longer a search engine, it’s a result engine

For a lot of searches on Google, you no longer need to go to a website to get what you need. You get the result. Google is now a result engine, not a search engine. Google has no competition in the result engine field.

The list of websites, the SERP is less and less central in Google.
And even this list is now letting you almost check websites content without going in thanks to the tons of sub-links described very precisely.
